Descriptif:

Cizhou Type Jar with Carved Design. Of squat globular form, broad based, with small cylindrical neck and everted lip; shallow foot and flat, unglazed base. A broad band of scrolling white slip, back over-slip, and transparent glaze. A broad band of scrolling peiny, with petal borders above and below, is reserved in black on white by cutting and scraping away the over-slip. The ground is partially stained brown through burial.

Commentaire:

The term Cizhou is used to denote a wide variety of stoneware with various decorations. The kilns are spread over a wide area and mainly provide the local population with practical objects for everyday use. This piece is double coated with slips of different superimposed colours. The decoration is reserved in black on white by cutting and scraping away the over-slip.
