    Nephrite. The fruit is depicted as if it were trapped by the branches of the tree in bloom.
  6. Vase with lid in the shape of a lotus 灰青玉雕荷形花插

    Qing dynasty, mid or late 19th c.

    Nephrite. The three stages in the flowering of the lotus are depicted here among ducks and various other birds. The bud, the flower and the fruit symbolise time past, present and future.
  7. Spouted vessel with lid in the shape of a lotus 灰青玉雕荷形鳥蓋水罐

    Late Qing dynasty, mid 19th c.

    Nephrite. The vessel is enclosed within a lotus pod. A crested bird serves as the handle for the lid. Various marsh animals decorate the object: a frog, a beetle and a dragonfly.
  8. Dish in the shape of a gourd 灰青玉褐斑紋葫蘆形盤

    Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    Nephrite. The vine winding around the dish allows it to be perfectly stable when set down.
  9. Oblong cup 灰青玉蝙蝠耳四足喜碗

    Qing dynasty, reign of Jiaqing 嘉慶 (1796-1820) or Daoguang 道光 (1821-1850)

    Nephrite. The rings acting as handles are held in place by bats.
  10. Oblong cup in the shape of a basket 錄玉雕葡萄紋藍形盤

    Jadeite. The various insects hiding around the vine shoot make up a rebus conveying the wish for happiness, fertility, and respect.

    Jadeite. The bottom of the dish depicts a lotus seed pod and its seeds, symbolising fertility.
  12. Cup in the shape of a lotus leaf 灰白玉荷葉形筆洗

    Qing dynasty, reign of Jiaqing 嘉慶 (1796-1820) or Daoguang 道光 (1821-1850)

    Nephrite. The centre of the dish depicts a fragment of a curling stem. Construing the rebus, “a lotus leaf” heye 荷葉 comes to express the wish for “a smooth career” heye 和業.

Basin 綠玉漢代式紋大碗

Late Qing dynasty, circa 1880-1920

Jadeite. A procession of carts executed in the style of the reliefs adorning tombs dating from the Han dynasty 漢 (206 BCE - 220 AD) unfolds around this piece.
