Case 4

Kanô Natsuo加納夏雄 (1828-1898), who worked for the Meiji Emperor and became professor at the Tôkyô School of Fine Arts in 1890, stands out among late 19th century artisans for his delicate, balanced compositions.

    During the Meiji era (1868-1912), following the enactment of the 1876 law abolishing the wearing of swords, metal workers were obliged to find new markets and turned to foreign collectors for whom they made large tsuba, decorated with vigorous designs, which were never intended to be actually mounted on a sword.
