  1. Pair of rectangular vases of archaic zun shape

    Nephrite. Each vase is decorated with ninety-six mobile rings, all carved out of a single stone.

    Jadeite. Reverse inscribed with the “Qianlong” 乾隆 (1736-1795) mark.

  4. Bowl with lid 灰白玉蓋碗

    Nephrite. The mouth of the vessel is rimmed by a scalloped collar with a sequence of ruyi heads. This symbol of good luck resembles a stylised cloud and means “according to your wishes” ruyi 如意.
  5. Oval vase with lid 禦用綠玉黑斑蓋尊

    Nephrite. The dragon lying at the centre of the decoration is surrounded by Buddhist emblems and a carp in the process of turning into a dragon. On the lid are depicted bats, another auspicious animal.
  6. Vessel with lid and openwork decoration

    Nephrite. The crown enclosing the vessel is decorated with stylised floral designs. The technique used in its manufacture probably enables the object to be employed as an incense burner.
  7. Brush pot 綠玉黑斑筆筒

    Nephrite. The landscape is dotted with figures amusing themselves by floating cups of wine in little streams. The game included declaiming lines of poetry at great speed. When a person failed to do so, he had to drink from a cup, which made it progressively harder to recite the poetry.
  8. Cup 白玉雙魚紋碗

    Nephrite. Two fish are depicted swimming belly to belly at the bottom of the cup. A pair of fish is a favourite image symbolising conjugal bliss.
  9. Oblong cup 灰青玉制婚喜用碗

    Nephrite. Two catfish encircle a swastika at the bottom of this vessel. This is a wedding bowl designed to be presented to the married couple with the wish that all things should turn out “just as they desire” nian nian ruyi 年年如意.
  10. Dish 綠玉花紋盤

    Nephrite. A floral decoration covers the entire dish, both inside and out.
