Kakiemon-style porcelain 柿右衛門様式磁器  (N°1-5)

The Kakiemon-style 柿右衛門 porcelains produced in the Arita 有田 region are characterised by an opaque and milky paste known as nigoshi-de 濁手, brightly-coloured enamels, and decorative layouts which leave large empty spaces. The main colours used include pale greens and yellows, an overglaze blue, as well as an orangey-red, reminiscent of the kaki fruit, which is said to have been discovered by the potter Sakaida Kakiemon 酒井田柿右衛門 (1596-1666). The decorative designs, often inspired by Chinese themes, are arranged asymmetrically, frequently without resorting to framing motifs.

 

Imari-style porcelain 伊万里様式磁器  (N°6-13)

Among the various productions of the kilns of the Arita region, those known as Imari 伊万里are characterised by a palette of colours combining a generally dark underglaze cobalt blue with polychrome enamels, predominantly red and gold. Much sought after in Europe in the second half of the 17th century, it owes its name to the port north of Arita from which it was exported. While the decoration of some pieces has a similar lightness to Kakiemon, a large part of the production adopts much denser and more crowded compositions. The use of strongly contrasting colours, as well as the division of the surface into registers and medallions, this group goes by the name of brocade-Imari (imari kinrande).
