Jade vessels of archaic shape 銅器紋玉器

In this period, the Chinese had a pronounced taste for antique bronzes. This predilection was transferred to other materials such as jade, which frequently, albeit very freely, echo archaic shapes and decorative schemes.

  1. Pair of lidded vessels with lids in the shape of an archaic gong 灰綠玉蓋觥一對

    Jadeite. The lid is shaped like two fabulous animals, while the vessels are decorated with dragons and taotie masks 饕餮.

    Nephrite. The decoration on the belly consists of mythical animals and geometric designs set within friezes.

    Jadeite. The elaborate decoration on this object is made up of archaic motifs and two magnificent phoenixes supporting the handles. The wide range of colours which can be seen on jade is especially apparent on this piece with strongly marked veins.

    Nephrite. A rather surprising cordon motif appears in various parts of the composition, showing off the quality of the stone cutter’s work.

    Jadeite. The lid is decorated with pierced medallions enclosing the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac.

    Nephrite. The belly and lid are decorated with friezes of archaic motifs.
  10. Vase with lid 灰白玉鳳凰蓋壺瓶

    Nephrite. This vase, which appears to be borne by the phoenix, is shaped like a bronze hu 壺.
