Case 29

Moghul- or Indian-style jade vessels

The so-called Moghul or Indian style covers a category of miscellaneous objects made by craftsmen whose origins are unclear; they may have been either Indian or Chinese. The name denotes pieces with extremely thin, often translucent walls decorated with stylised floral or Buddhist motifs.

  1. Vase with lid

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1938-133

Jadeite. The floral scrolls and the intricacy of the decoration are typical of the style.

  2. Dish

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1932-113

Jadeite. Two elaborately-conceived chrysanthemums on the top of the handles create a contrast with the plainness of the vessel itself.
  3. Vase with lid

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1938-95

Jadeite. Scrollwork, flower and foliage decoration with dragon- and phoenix-shaped handles.
  4. Cup with lid on a stand

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1938-26

Nephrite. The lid is decorated with eight medallions on a lattice ground enclosing animals.
  5. Vase

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1933-93

Nephrite. On the belly is depicted a Buddha seated on a lotus-shaped throne. An aureole encircles his head, while his body is enclosed by a halo, within which are engraved two verses, one in Chinese and one in Tibetan.
  6. Vase with lid

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1931-96

Jadeite. On the belly are depicted two Buddhist figures alternating with stylised lotus garlands.
  7. Vase with lid

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1937-94

Jadeite. Decorated with Buddhist figures. This is probably the kind of stone sometimes called camphor jade, because the very thin and almost transparent walls look like colourless glass flecked with white.
  8. Spouted vessel with lid

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1934-125

Nephrite. Decorated with Buddhist figures seated in various positions.
  9. Spouted vessel with lid

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1936-77

Jadeite. Stylised foliate decoration embellished with rubies and spinels.

  10. Pair of dishes in the shape of chrysanthemums

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1931-6 and CB-JC-1931-7

    Jadeite.
  11. Oblong cup with lid

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1932-25

Jadeite. Turned upside down, the lid can be used as a second cup.
  12. Cup (one of a pair)

Late Qing dynasty or early Republic (1912-1949)

    CB-JC-1932-23

Jadeite. Garlands of stylised foliate motifs.
