Apart from the official Gotô 後藤 school (drawer 2), a number of independent workshops, known as machibori 町彫, set up during the Edo period in the capital and the main urban centers such as Kyôto. Freed from the constraints imposed by the court of the shôgun, these artisans could make full use of coloured inlay effects (iroe 色绘), and considerably widened the repertoire of decorative motifs used on sword fittings.
