Description:

Bowl (of a pair) with rounded, spreading sides and gently everted lip; straight foot. Each bowl is painted with three landscapes in delicate natural colouring within cartouches framed with crimson scrollwork and set in a ground of peony scrolls in white enamel; and inside each bowl on the bottom are goldfish swimming among watergrass in green and red.

The subjects of the landscapes are as follows: on one bowl (n°603) three horsemen riding beside a lake and approaching a gateway; a boatman punting between rocky banks towards a bridge; and a cormorant fisherman on a river with willows. On the other bowl (n°604) a man on a donkey crossing a low bridge leading towards a pavilion; two figures in a boat watched by another standing in the bank under trees; and a traveller approaching a gate where a servant is seen wielding a broom.
