Description:
A massively-built potiche with sides shaped in twelve lobes, and high, spreading foot; the flaring neck cut down. The painting is in a misfired copper-red pigment that has emerged generally as a soft grey. Twelve main panels round the sides are painted each with different flowering plant, the entire scheme representing the Four Seasons, three times repeated. Linked lappet panels containing lotus sprays appear above, and lotus-petal panels from a border below; on the shoulder are cloud motives and on the neck, more lotus-petal panels, which appear also on the foot between borders of key-fret and classic scroll. The foot and slightly recessed base show firing cracks, filled and refired. Where thin, the glaze shows patches of iron oxidisation.
