Polychrome takamaki-e, ivory and metal 色絵高蒔絵、象牙、金属
The incense game, whose origins are to be found in the Heian court (794-1185), became particularly popular in the Edo period. The object of the game is to identify combinations of aromatic woods by their scent (or rather by “listening” kiku 聞くto the incense). In the variant presented here, known as Genjikô 源氏香, the participants indicate their answers by using one of 52 signs referring to the chapters of the famous 11th-century novel, The Tale of Genji (Genji-monogatari 源氏物語).
This set includes the following items:
Wrapping papers for each of the incense woods
Saw, chisel, and hammer for splitting the wood
Spatula for arranging ash
Pair of pincers for handling hot charcoal
Incense-heater (kikikôro 聞香炉) of metal and lacquer, containing ash and hot charcoal; the wood shavings are heated on fine mica sheets (ginyô 銀葉) placed over the openings in the cover
Incense burner (hitori 火取)
Box for holding the tiles (kôfuda 香札) used to indicate the players’ answers
Folding paper bearing the symbols of the chapters of the Tale of Genji
Lacquered game board
Ink stone, water dropper and writing utensils for recording the results
