Subject/design:
Sôma no furu dairi 相馬の古内裏. A large skeleton appearing to Ôtake Tarô Mitsukuni 大宅太郎光圀 and his retainer, being invoked by Takiyasha, the woman standing on the left holding a scroll. Takiyasha was the daughter of Taira no Masakado 平将門, Mitsukuni one of his principal retainers. After Masakado - unlike Mitsukuni - died in a battle in 940, Takiyasha went to live in his house, Sôma 相馬 Castle, then haunted by ghosts believed to be apparitions of the men who had died in the battle. Mitsukuni tried not to be disturbed by their presence.
